17 Jun What’s the difference between a conservatory and an orangery?
People talk about conservatories and orangeries like they are the same thing. And it makes sense why. They both give you more space, more light, and a closer feel to your garden. But they are not quite the same.
What is a conservatory?
A conservatory is all about the light. That is the first thing you notice when you step inside. Most of the walls are made of glass, and sometimes the roof is too. So, even though you are indoors, it feels like you are part of the outside. And you are warm and dry the whole time.
At Priory Windows & Conservatories, each conservatory is fully bespoke. Our team works with the shape of your home, the style of your property, and how you actually plan to use the space. So, if you want a quiet place to read in the sun or a breakfast area with a garden view, we will help you make that idea real.
Some people worry that conservatories are too cold in winter or too hot in summer. That used to be true with older builds, but conservatory materials have come a long way. The glass used in most good quality conservatories in Tyneside is energy-efficient, so it is better at trapping warmth inside during winter and reflecting some of the heat during summer. You can also choose a solid or hybrid roof for even better insulation.
What is an orangery?
Where conservatories feel light and open, orangeries feel more solid and private. They use a mix of brick and glass, so the structure looks more like part of the house. You still get a lot of natural light (especially if you also get a roof lantern), but it feels more enclosed.
If you want a formal or versatile space, an orangery works well. It feels like a regular room but much brighter. Our orangeries include brick pillars or columns that match your home, so the orangery looks like it has always been there. That adds to the value of your home and makes it feel more permanent.
Which is better for you?
There is no wrong answer. It depends on what you like and how you will use the space. If you want to feel surrounded by light and close to nature, a conservatory is the better choice. If you want something that blends more closely with your home and feels a little more private, an orangery could be right for you.
One nice thing about working with Priory Windows & Conservatories is that nothing is off the shelf. We design everything from scratch. With a custom design, your new room will look beautiful and be practical for your needs.
